Discovering Georgioupolis Crete Greece
The Municipality of Georgioupolis, is indeed one from the more popular tourist destinations in Crete. Georgioupolis is found in the North-western coast of island, in the gulf of Almiros River and in the coast that crosses the gulf, between vines, olive groves and forests.
At georgioupolis, the visitor finds all the geomorphologic characteristics of island, assembled in a small region: Mountain and plain, river, lake and sea, wild nature and cultivable ground.

Historical elements for the season are presented by the minoan ages. The excavations revealed a grave of minoan type at Kastello and discoveries of religion spaces in the cavern "Korakia'". Archaeological localities have been found also in the south regions of Georgioupolis settlement, where was located the ancient "Amfimalla", easternly the settlement Dramion (ancient Ydramia or Ydramio).
The archaeological discoveries, that are placed in the Chania's museum, show that the city existed at the after minoan or after palaces period (1580-1100 p.H.) and presented her bigger acne at the roman period. Finally, in the settlement "Kavalos" in th north of the lake, were found remains of the roman season, while in the lake's banks is placed the existence of holy dedicated in the Korisia Athina.
Blessed from God, we get used to say for this region of Crete, Apokoronas, part of which is also the Municipality of Georgioupolis. From the imposing top of the Leuka Ori, that we gaze from our balconies, spring the rivers that supply with water Western Crete.. Georgioupolis is found at the way of one of the bigger water axes of island. In this placement, it owes her exceptional natural environment, with big diversity and rarity of plants and animals.
Georgioupolis is crossed by rivers. The rivers create water biotopes and inbetween takes shape the only natural lake of Crete, the southern of Europe, Lake of Koyrnas. At length of gulf, is extended one of the bigger beaches of island, length of 6 km. A splendid alternation of landscapes, that justifies day-long tours. Many of these regions are protected ecotopes and have been proposed for integration in the environmental net In the biotopes of Georgioupolis, they have been recorded up to nowadays 174 species of birds: some of them live here as permanent, other rest on their way to immigration and other pass the winter. Birds as the herons, the cormorants, the swans, the widgeons, the rednecks and the wagtails, meet themselves so much in estuaries of rivers and the beach as well as in the lake, giving occasion for observation.
Many of them are considered as infrequent and world threatened types, as the duck of marsh (Anytha nyroca), the moygkriti's (Botaururs stallaris), the stiktaeto's (Aquilla clanga) and the mayropetritis (Falco eleonorae). Also in the region live species as the spitofido (Elaphe situla), the water turtle Mauremys caspica, the marine turtle caretta caretta and the Mediterranean seal Monachus monachus.
